Residents Catch Oarfish and Panic Over Attacks from the gods
It is a fact people worship a lot of things, and they are known to ascribe
spiritual undertone to things that don’t happen frequently.
While this community in Surigao del Norte in Philippine does not worship
the oarfish, but they have been scared off their wits after a resident caught
the said fish in shallow waters on December 15.
People got to know about this catch after the resident attempted to sell
the odd fish in the market. Because of the strange appearance of the 16-foot fish,
people refused to buy it, and soon some elders recognized it as an oarfish.
According to the tradition of the people, the appearance of deep-sea fishes
connotes trouble. These fishes are known in Japan as ‘The Messenger from the
Sea God’s Palace’, are usually associated with impending earthquakes. This
means that the fishes come to deliver a message for the people to expect some
form of natural disaster.
However, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has since debunked
this fear saying that it has no scientific basis. The bureau ordered for the
burial of the fish since it can’t be eaten.
